Civil Society and the Health Sector
Staff involved: Fran Baum and staff from the School of Public Health, University of Western Cape, Cape Town, South Africa

SACHRU's contribution, which has been funded by the World Health Organisation, was brought to completion this year. SACHRU was given permission by WHO to publish the report, Tapping into Civil Society: Guidelines for linking health systems with civil society, that resulted from the research on testing a set of guidelines designed to help regional health services establish effective working links with local community groups. These guidelines were tested in Australia (Hills, Mallee, Southern Regional Health Service) South Africa, Colombia and Senegal. The Tapping into Civil Society report is illustrated by a series of Simon Kneebone cartoons which help considerably in putting across the lessons learnt in the testing phrase. The Tapping into Civil Society report has been sold within Australia and also overseas.
